Please read the following instructions carefully before contacting me. If you don't, I probably won't be able to reply to your inquiry. Thanks!
Please also notice that since I am affiliated with three graduate programs, MAE, CS, and BME, I accept students in all these programs.

If you are considering pursuing PhD research with me,
- Please read Prof. Mor Harchol-Balter's "Applying to Ph.D. Programs" first. This panel is also quite informative.
- Please go to here (for MAE students), here (for CS students), or here (for BME students) to learn more about our PhD admission process.
- Please notice that, due to the large number of requests, I will only reply to your inquiry email after you have submitted your PhD application (ideally you would contact me immediately after you have submitted your application, as earlier as possible and no later than Feb.). My lab is well-funded, there is no need to inquire whether there are open positions. Please make sure to list me as a potential advisor in your application and statement.
- I expect my PhD students to have strong mathematical background and be willing to work on high-risk and high-reward research topics (many are interdisciplinary).
- Please consider the fact that the positions are extremely competitive, even more so for international students.
- When drafting your email, please follow these instructions:
- Please let me know that you have submitted your application.
- Please keep your email as concise as possible.
- Please attach an academic CV to your email. Please include your publications in the CV.
- Currently my lab is interested in the following five research thrusts, please briefly explain to me how your background can fit into one (or more) of these thrusts:
- Trustworthy AI/CPS, particularly safety and explanability
- Adaptive human-autonomy teaming
- Cognitive neuroengineering
- Autonomous UAS and UAS swarms
- AI and aerial robotics for agricultural, environmental, public health, and defense applications
If you are considering pursuing MS research with me,
- We currently have no opening.
- Please consider the fact that I rarely fund (i.e., offer GSRs to) MS students.
- Please contact me only after you have been admitted to our program(s). Exceptions can be made for those whose eventual degree objective is a PhD but would like to get an MS first. In that case, please follow the instruction above for PhD prospective students.
- Please keep in mind that, due to my limited bandwidth, I can only take students who are interested in completing a thesis (MS Plan I). Exceptions can be made for CS MS II students.
- Please attach an academic CV to your email.
If you are considering joining my lab as an undergraduate researcher (open only to current UC Davis students in STEM majors),
- We currently have no opening (possibly until Spring 2023).
- Please remember that as an undergraduate researcher, you are expected to commit a significant amount of time on your research.
- You must have an excellent academic record and are strong on hand-on skills and/or coding.
- Please attach a resume (including information such as your GPA, classes taken, and programming languages) to your email.
- Any open position will be highly competitive and mostly for students who are interesting in pursuing a graduate degree later.
- Military students (including ROTC students, veterans, and military dependents) in STEM majors are highly encouraged to apply.
- Due to the large number of requests, it is not possible for me to reply to all inquiries.
